About myofunctional therapy

About MYO

Myofunctional therapy restores balance and harmony by retraining oral and facial muscles, improving breathing, swallowing, and posture for better health and overall well-being.

This is done by eliminating orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs)

How OMD issues arise

Orofacial myofunctional disorders develop due to a combination of factors that disrupt normal oral and facial muscle function.

Common causes include prolonged thumb-sucking or pacifier use, tongue ties, mouth breathing due to allergies or nasal obstruction, and improper swallowing patterns.

These habits can alter muscle development, leading to issues like tongue thrust, open-mouth posture, and improper jaw growth.

Long term OMD issues

Without intervention, these dysfunctions can affect breathing, speech, sleep, and facial structure and  over time could lead to more serious health issues like snoring, sleep apnea, poor posture, digestive issues, TMD,  orthodontic complications, and even behavioural challenges.

Why you need MYO

Facial asymmetry Tooth grinding Gingivitis Atypical swallow Restricted tongue movement Cavities Orthodontic relapse Snoring Drooling Jaw pain Mouthbreathing Messy eaters Thumb sucking Bloating after eating Nail biting Poor facial tone Frequent ear issues Behavioural problems Issues with sleep Poor posture Lip/cheek biting Acid reflux

What MYO can do

Eliminate Thumb-Sucking Correct Tongue-Resting Posture Improve digestive issues Reduce neck and shoulder pain Improve Your Breathing Reduce Open-Mouth Posture Improve Sluggish Appearance Improve Your Sleep Correct Tongue Thrust Assess Need For Tongue-Tie Release Eliminate Nail Biting Alleviate acid reflux

The MYO process

Orofacial myofunctional therapy not only strengthens the muscles of the face, mouth, and tongue and re-patterns the brain by creating new neural pathways for proper function.

This process, known as neuroplasticity, allows the nervous system to adapt and replace improper habits—such as mouth breathing or tongue thrusting—with more efficient, natural patterns. Over time, these new patterns become automatic, leading to lasting long-term improvements.

Myofunctional therapy retrains the body to use the tongue, lips, and facial muscles correctly, improving breathing, swallowing, and overall orofacial function.

What a MYO program looks like

Myofunctional therapy follows a structured, progressive approach where each phase builds upon the previous one to reinforce muscle memory and ensuring the changes become permanent for better breathing, swallowing, and overall health.
