Choosing the right therapist - Why Training Matters:
-
Quality of Education: Reputable programs offer evidence-based approaches, comprehensive assessments, up-to-date protocols, more training hours and certification examinations.
-
Mentorship & Experience: Many respected programs include supervised mentorship, case reviews, and hands-on clinical experience.
-
Professional Standards: Programs aligned with organizations like the IAOM (International Association of Orofacial Myology), AOMT (Academy of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy), or Breathe Institute often have rigorous standards.
Why does MYO take so long?
With MYO Therapy we are working with neuroplasticity: the ability of neural networks in the brain to change through growth and reorganization. This takes time and repetition to happen, which is why consistent and frequent home practice is so important. You will hear your clinician refer to “frequency” and “duration” a lot during your treatment program, as these are key factors in success of OMT. Without proper habituation, relapse is more likely to occur.
How much time do I need to spend at home?
You will be given specific instructions for each exercise, but generally it is recommended that you practice 2-3 times per day, for 10-15 minutes each for active (seated at a table) exercises and 20-30 minutes for passive (while watching tv, reading) exercises.
How long is a MYO program?
MYO programs need to be 6-12 months long. Neruoplasticity must occur in order for your body to sustain long term results of therapy. The duration depends on the severity and number of MYO disorders as well as compliance with daily exercises.
How should I prepare for my MYO session?
Sessions may be scheduled in person or video call. Please bring the the supplies from your MYO kit including your therapy book
How long does a MYO session take?
Session duration varies but typically ranges from 30-60 minutes, depending on individual age needs and therapy plans.
How long before I see results from MYO?
Results vary, but noticeable improvements often occur within a few weeks to months. Consistency and adherence to your individualized program contribute to optimal outcomes.
Is MYO covered by insurance?
Coverage varies by insurance provider. We recommend checking with your insurance company to determine your specific coverage for Myofunctional Therapy services.
Is MYO suitable for children?
Yes, Myofunctional Therapy is often recommended for children to address issues like tongue tie, tongue thrust, thumb-sucking, and mouth breathing, promoting healthy oral development. This can help prevent future issues such as tooth crowding, jaw pain, headaches, orthodontic relapse, sleep disordered breathing and behavioural issues.
